Baseball Mental Skills Ebook
Typically, there is a battle going on within. The two voices inside your head will clash, with Self A attempting to focus on your task and Self B telling you how or why you aren’t capable. Let’s get to work and start our journey to playing your best baseball and maximizing both your confidence and your abilities. As I’m sure you know, baseball is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. You are not only playing against your opponents but also your own mind. It’s an internal battle that everyone faces, but some players have the tools to master it, while others fall victim to it. If you’ve never worked on your mental game, don’t beat yourself up… most players haven’t either. This is why so many baseball players never reach their potential, as they don't understand how to quiet the mind to play more consistently.
Keep reading to learn the seven best mental baseball strategies to take your game to the next level and reach your true potential. Soon enough, you’ll be playing better than you thought possible.
#1 Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude
Your attitude is everything on the baseball field (and in life). So many players have a bad attitude on the field and wonder why they don’t perform like they want. To play better baseball and set yourself up for a better mental game, change your attitude to gratitude. Being grateful is something you control and can have a massive impact on your game. Gratitude equals happiness.
If you’re happier on the field, you won’t get as frustrated or emotional; you’ll enjoy good plays more, feel better during and after the game, have the mental strength to deal with errors and create better relationships with teammates and coaches. This comes from simply being grateful.
Think about it like this… You’re lucky enough to have the opportunity to play baseball, own equipment, and access fields. You’re healthy enough to participate in a sport you love. Some people don’t have these things but want them deeply. You do, so appreciate them immediately. Too many players put so much pressure on themselves to play perfectly despite juggling other responsibilities. You can’t control much in baseball, but you can control your attitude.
The sooner you appreciate every time you’re on the field, the more you will invite greatness into your game. In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness.
Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.
#2 Harness the Power of Self-Talk
What you say to yourself can build you up or tear you down. Baseball is already hard enough; don’t make it more difficult by speaking negatively about yourself and your game. Not to mention, your mind loves to make what you say about yourself come true, regardless of whether it’s positive or negative. That’s why it's so significant to speak about positive things in your life (on or off the field).
The content of your self-talk is important because, believe it or not, you are the most influential person in your head. Yes, other people can undoubtedly influence the way we feel and think, but at the end of the day, we are the ones who accept or reject the messages received from others.
What you say to yourself during the game is pivotal in playing your best baseball. Positive self-talk is a choice you must make. What you say to yourself (both internally and externally) determines how much fun you have and how well you can play in any game. Don’t forget, your mind is always listening to what you’re saying, so make sure it’s hearing positive, empowering statements, not negative ones.
To change your self-talk, it would be best to first become aware of your language. The next time you play, focus solely on what you say out loud to your teammates and under your breath to yourself. If you’re like most players, you will be shocked at how many negative things you say to yourself without even realizing it.
Hopefully, you will notice that you say some positive things, too. When you see that, congratulate yourself when you say positive, empowering statements. Then try to catch yourself when you’re spewing harmful venom, so you catch yourself in the act. If you have nothing positive to say, keep quiet. It’s better to stay neutral than berate yourself and your abilities on the field.
A good rule is that if you wouldn’t say it to one of your teammates, you should never say it to yourself. Treat yourself just like you do another person! You must maintain a positive, optimistic attitude throughout the game.
#3 Stay Present
To play your best baseball, your mind can’t wander - the present moment is all that matters. You will never play your best baseball if you dwell on errors you made earlier or get anxious about upcoming plays. You can’t change the past; the future hasn’t happened yet. Focus 100% of your attention on the present moment to give yourself the best chance to make a good play.
An easy trick to get present is to wear a rubber band on your wrist. I have custom green ones that remind you to breathe.
Focus on your breath whenever you look back to a play you wish you had made or a future play you’re anxious about. I learned this great trick from a sports psychologist who has done wonders for me off the field.
Over time, this will train your mind to stay more focused on the present moment and not drift to the past or future. Remember, baseball is one play at a time - don’t get ahead of yourself.
The past is history, the future is a mystery, this moment is a gift that’s why they call it the present.
#4 Develop Routines
A strong set of routines is one of the few things all elite players have in common. Every professional baseball player has a routine, while most amateurs don’t have one at all.
Routines are part of many sports, not just baseball. NFL kickers have one when they line up for a field goal, and basketball players have one at the free-throw line. Each player crafts a unique routine tailored to their needs to stay focused and confident. The same goes for baseball. A pre-pitch routine is another one of the few things you can control on the field. An effective routine will help you analyze the game, stay calm, improve pace, and transfer your practice to the game.
This helps you build a cocoon around yourself. This is the mysterious zone that athletes refer to longingly. But there's nothing mysterious about it. A well-crafted routine can be the key to more consistent and improved performances for amateur baseball players.
You can elevate your game to the next level by staying focused and prepared.
#5 Be Willing to Make Mistakes
To be able to hit the game-winning home run, you have to be willing to strike out in the same batter’s box.
Baseball is a game of failures and mistakes. Even the best players make errors and experience slumps. The key is to embrace mistakes as part of the game and use them as learning opportunities. When you’re willing to make mistakes, you free yourself from the fear of failure. This allows you to play more relaxed and confidently, improving your performance.
Remember, every mistake is a chance to grow and improve. Adopt a growth mindset where you see setbacks as stepping stones to success. Learn from your mistakes, make adjustments, and keep pushing forward. The best players in baseball are those who can bounce back quickly and keep striving for excellence.
#6 Visualization is Key to Great Performance
Visualization is a great mental tool to create your dream performance on the field. When you imagine yourself doing something great, your subconscious mind gets to work making it a reality. Think about how vividly you can picture something you want and eventually get it.
Visualization creates a powerful cycle that can greatly impact your baseball game. To get started with visualization, create some images in your mind of yourself playing great baseball. Maybe it’s getting the game-winning hit or making a clutch catch in the outfield. See yourself hitting bombs and making big plays over and over in your mind until it happens on the field.
If you’re new to visualization, the best time to do it is before you sleep. As you lay in bed, think about the next game and how you want to play. Imagine yourself making clutch plays and feeling great on the field. This practice will excite you about your game and help you create the ideal outcome. If you get nervous before a game, visualization is a great way to calm your mind and focus on how you want to play.
It’s also great if you just had a poor performance and need to regain your confidence. Many elite players use this mental baseball strategy, but it also works for players at every level. Visualization is not just about creating images in your mind, it's about creating a new reality and making it a part of your baseball game. Visualization is a powerful tool to help you build confidence and reach your full baseball potential.
If you can see it in your mind, you can make it happen on the field. So, use visualization to your advantage and be amazed at what you can achieve!
#7 Be Your Own Biggest Fan
To be the best baseball player you can be, you need to create your own story and your own reality, then do everything you can to fulfill it. Great storytelling can help you reach your goals. How can you expect others to believe in you if you don't believe in yourself?
